HAND-TO-HAND & HEART-TO-HEART

Since our founding in 1872, Alpha Phi has been an organization of women who come together in support of each other. When we do not support one another, we fail to fulfill our promise to our sisters. One of our biggest assets as an organization is the diverse backgrounds that each of brings to the table. Diversity in heritage, ethnicity, religious background, upbringing, interest, and thought are all the unique pieces of each member that makes them who they are, and in turn what they bring to Alpha Phi. Alpha Phi does not support racism, bigotry, or hate of any kind. We are taking steps to continue to improve the ways we address this within our Fraternity.

The Alpha Phi history is a tapestry of our members’ stories and we must acknowledge that some of those stories have not always illustrated the high ideals of Alpha Phi, especially as an organization that has existed through many generations. We apologize for the actions of members that have not been aligned with the ideals of Alpha Phi. Racism, hate, bigotry and violence have no place in Alpha Phi and are in complete contradiction with our purpose; we will not stand silently by as our communities and the world are impacted by violence and injustice. If we cease to support each other in pursuit of justice, equality, kindness, safety and truth, we cease to uphold the values which Alpha Phi and so many others hold dear.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION
WE ARE COMMITTED TO BETTERING OURSELVES, OUR SISTERHOOD & THE ANN ARBOR COMMUNITY. IN TURN, WE HOPE TO MAKE THE WORLD A HAPPIER, SAFER, AND BETTER PLACE TO BE.
EDUCATION
Alpha Phi specifically created the programming area, Stand Together, to educate members on topics related to inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment. Through the programming in Stand Together, Alpha Phi helps members create a sense of belonging and connectedness that engages individuals in an authentic manner in which uniqueness is valued, respected, and supported through opportunities and interaction. We are committed to providing education and resources that build cultural competence and to actively engage in conversations that challenge one another to be anti-racist.

Alpha Phi has a partnership with The Cross Cultural Fraternal Advisors Institute Collaborative, who are experts and leaders in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion. Since fall 2020, every collegiate member, volunteer and staff member has participated in a foundational training called Brave and Bold Dialogues and will build upon this through continued educational experiences and dialogue that challenge us to explore our identities, biases and positionally.

Brave & Bold Dialogues: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion where members will be able to:

-
Be able to increase their knowledge of what it means to own their personal and social identities through a social justice lens and how they express themselves based off those identities.
-
Be able to increase understanding and awareness as it relates to diversity, inclusion and equity.
-
Be able to develop skills and best practices that utilizes this knowledge and analysis to be more personally and professionally diverse and inclusive in engaging with others.
